Shaffer Family Adoption

Dylan and Megan met in college, married soon afterward, and will celebrate their thirteenth wedding anniversary later this year. Since getting married, they have had three biological boys: Malachi (8), Slade (6), and Amos (2).

Even before they were married, Dylan and Megan knew adoption would one day be a part of their story. In fact, God put this on Dylan’s heart when he was in high school; and while the two were dating, Dylan was clear adoption was something he intended to pursue. The reason for Dylan’s great conviction, which over the years has also become Megan's conviction, is that adoption is already part of their story. As believers the Shaffers believe that they, in their natural state, are orphans who are separated from God and have no power to change that. However, God, in his great love, stepped down from his throne to walk among humans, to pay the price for our sins by dying on the cross, and ultimately to defeat death by his resurrection. In so doing, he has created a way for us to be adopted as sons and daughters into his family. Because they believe this, they must take adoption seriously.

Dylan and Megan spent several years volunteering with the 35Kcampaign and sowing seeds into other adoptive families. They both faithfully served multiple years as 35K board members and helped to drive forward the vision of alleviating the financial burden for families adopting children from around the world with the mission to bring them into loving, gospel centered homes.

Adoption is something they discuss regularly in their family. Their boys understand

they will eventually have an adopted sibling, and they are very excited to welcome this

child home. When the boys draw pictures of their family, they usually include a drawing of their

future adopted sibling. They ask us often what his or her name will be, if the child will like

sports or dinosaurs or Legos, and which seat in the car will belong to this child. Dylan and Megan are so eager to bring their child home and learn the answers to these questions and so many more.
